Overview of Remote Work in Athens – My experience

My trip to Athens was a chaotic one to say the least. Travelling from Albufeira to Lisbon then an overnight bus from Lisbon to Madrid. After just one night in Madrid, I then had an early flight to Milan with an 9 hr layover before finally making my way to Athens. My accommodation was another shared apartment, spacious and equipped with a tremendous balcony that overlook a church and mountains. Probably one of my best views so far in a peaceful part of Athens. It was a little tricky at times to get into the city, finding public transport not very reliable and the metro was about a 20-30 minute walk from my place. Be mindful of this especially on weekends because Athens was lot bigger then I initially expected and taxi fares can vary. Apart from this I absolute loved the culture and ancient style of Athens, the people were always kind ready to have some fun. Athens even though being quite chaotic especially with the roads actually felt calm in a way due to the people and general attitude I received. I felt glad to have stayed here for a long stay getting use to the way of life and not just the tourist attractions that Athens brings. I look forward to my next opportunity to live with the gods.

Working in Athens: My space and Co-working Spaces

My space:

As I continue to budget travel. I again had to opt for predominately working from my home. As always I made sure I had a big desk which was well equipped for working. My desk chair was a little uncomfortable and during this time as I realised that it is very important to have a good desk chair especially long term you can have issues with your back. If you can I would recommend opting for a coworking space because these are also likely to have ergonomic chairs which offer great back support for long working hours. My setup however did meet all my working needs during my stay.

Accommodation for Digital Nomad in Athens

1. Spotahome: Streamlined Living with a Click

For hassle-free and reliable accommodation, platforms like Spotahome offer a convenient solution. This is the platform that I used to book my stay. It was an very affordable stay in the area if Zografos which was about 20 minutes outside the city centre. Zografos, a residential area known for its tranquillity and accessibility, offers a range of Spotahome-listed spaces, providing a homey atmosphere for remote work. I had a very peaceful stay and a great apartment with a lot of space and open views from the balcony.

2. Airbnb Gems: Local Living for Every Budget

Dive into the local lifestyle by exploring Athens through Airbnb. Whether you choose a cosy studio in Plaka or a modern apartment in Kolonaki, Airbnb caters to various budgets. Ensure the chosen place has robust Wi-Fi, making it a practical choice for remote work. As always if your on a budget I do recommend doing a monthly stay to take advantage of the big savings on offer with Airbnb. Athens is  a great place for long term stays.

3. Hostel Adaptations: Budget-Friendly Social Spaces

Athens’ hostels have evolved to cater to the needs of digital nomads. Areas like Psiri and Monastiraki boast hostels with shared workspaces and reliable internet. The social atmosphere allows for networking opportunities with like-minded travellers, creating a unique blend of affordability and community.

4. Syntagma Square Hotels: Central Convenience for Remote Workers

Opt for the convenience of staying around Syntagma Square, where numerous hotels cater to the needs of remote workers. Centrally located, these hotels provide easy access to public transportation, historical sites, and the lively city scene. Enjoy business-friendly amenities, ensuring a comfortable work-stay balance.

Transportation and Commuting for Digital Nomad in Athens

1. Athens Metro:

The Athens Metro is a digital nomad’s best friend, connecting key neighbourhoods with speed and efficiency. With three lines (Red, Blue, and Green), it’s the go-to option for navigating the city centre and reaching popular districts. It is very affordable but I will say it does lack in connecting to outer regions as I had quite the walk to the station. Also be aware of closing times, I found them to close a little earlier then other cities.

2. Buses: Extensive Routes for Every Corner

Athens boasts an extensive bus network that covers the city and its outskirts. This tends to be your main source of transport as it reaches further parts of the city. Unfortunately, they can be quite unpredictable with them not usually on time. Be especially wary on weekends with a lot less active busses scheduled during these days.

3. Trams: Scenic and Convenient Coastal Travel

For a more scenic commute, consider the Athens tram system, especially if you’re staying along the coastal areas. Connecting the city centre with coastal neighbourhoods like Glyfada and Voula, trams offer a relaxed and picturesque journey. The tram system was ok but again wasn’t very reliable and wouldn’t run very late. I personally didn’t use it to often as I wasn’t on the coastal side of the city.

5. Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Door-to-Door Convenience

When you need door-to-door convenience, Athens’ taxis and ride-sharing services have got you covered. Hail a cab or use popular ride-sharing apps to navigate the city with ease, especially during late hours as you can’t rely on the public transport during these times. Do note that most drivers would prefer or only accept cash.

Athens offers a range of accommodation options catering to different budgets. Whether you opt for an Airbnb, a hostel, or a hotel, consider the cost per month. I did a lot of cooking to save but also recommend if you’re trying to save then stay away from touristy areas as these are still very expensive.

Public transportation in Athens is not only efficient but also budget friendly. Invest in an integrated transportation card for discounted metro, bus, and tram fares. I just got a 10-trip ticket which I purchased a few times as it was the most convenient way for me. I mostly did a lot of waking around which is still the best way to truly explore the city. Taxis and ride-sharing services are additional options for convenient travel.

Athens, rich in history and culture, offers numerous affordable or free attractions. Plan your leisure activities by exploring the ancient sites, museums with discounted admission days, and local events. Embrace the vibrant street culture and community gatherings without straining your budget. Do take note of the deals you can get. I was lucky and was able to get discounts at most places I visited.

But overall, you can get around just fine with English.

Being a coffee lover, I was eager to try the coffee. I will say they do have some good coffee but also some quite poor coffee as well if I compare it with Australia.

I went to a music festival called Primer during my stay which was fantastic along the coast. Attend neighbourhood gatherings and cultural events, fostering connections with the Athenian community.

Athens Climate Guide: Navigating Weather as a Digital Nomad

Athens experiences a Mediterranean climate, featuring hot, dry summers from June to August, perfect for outdoor exploration and embracing the vibrant culture. Winters, from December to February, are mild, providing comfortable conditions for exploring historical sites and museums without the intense summer heat. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer moderate temperatures, making them pleasant for digital nomads. While most rainfall occurs in winter, occasional rain can happen throughout the year, so it’s advisable to carry an umbrella or rain jacket during the winter season. My stay was late summer in August and experience and array of weather from hot days to also heavy thunder storms with flash flooding.
